For my New Year’s resolutions, I’ve only managed to give up beef so far. I haven’t gotten around to exercising, and once again, I’ve fallen into the habit of thinking money grows on trees. I bought a purse last night that I wanted, but definitely didn’t need. At least I got it on sale!
A few of us at the office started a book club—well, more like one of us kicked it off and the rest of us joined in. Our first book for February is Local Woman Missing by Mary Kubica.
People don’t just disappear without a trace…
Shelby Tebow is the first to go missing. Not long after, Meredith Dickey and her six-year-old daughter, Delilah, vanish just blocks away from where Shelby was last seen, striking fear into their once-peaceful community. Are these incidents connected? After an elusive search that yields more questions than answers, the case eventually goes cold.
Now, eleven years later, Delilah shockingly returns. Everyone wants to know what happened to her, but no one is prepared for what they’ll find…
I’m more into trashy romance novels, so it’ll be interesting to dive into other genres for a change. Book clubs kind of take me back to my senior year of high school, when we had to read a bunch of “literature” in honors English. Mrs. Seeley was all about introducing us to a bunch of books that I didn’t want to read, but surprisingly, some of it ended up being enjoyable. The book we’re reading now is one I suggested, so I’m extra interested in diving into it. Hope it lives up to the hype!
I’m not great with scary movies or stories, so it’ll be interesting to see how creeped out I get with this book. The genre is mystery, thriller, and suspense, which if this was a movie – I’d be really into. I did think about getting this book on Audible because listening to a story is always fun, but in the end, I went for the physical paperback.
I haven’t bought an actual book that wasn’t a cookbook in over ten years—ever since I discovered e-books. So, I think for this book club I will invest in paperbacks. It’ll be nice to actually feel and experience a real book again. There’s something about the pages, the weight, and just the whole vibe that e-books can’t quite match. However, I really do love the ease of e-books.
I also picked up Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros. It’s book one of three (so far), and everyone’s been raving about it. I’m late to the party, as usual! I haven’t started it yet, but I’m definitely looking forward to it. I just need to start reading. Why do I have such commitment issues?! Committing to a book or a series on Netflix just feels like so much effort. I’m really interested in both, but I can’t seem to bring myself to dive in and actually start.
For sure, I will have to start reading Local Woman Missing. I have a month to do it and I will! I’ll keep you updated on the book. Would you like to read it with us? If it sounds like something you’d enjoy, feel free to join in!
