March is off with a bang

Mar. 09, 2025

Apologies for being MIA for the past couple of weeks, it’s been a hectic time. My mom went overseas for my cousin’s wedding, but due to some health issues and doctor appointments, my dad couldn’t join her. So, I’ve been dadsitting. While I’m perfectly fine living off ramen with occasional takeout, I have to make sure my dad is eating well-balanced meals.

He’s pretty easy to take care of, thankfully. I just need to meal prep the night before since I have a hard time getting out of bed in the mornings to cook everything from scratch. I make sure to prepare his lunch in advance so all he has to do is heat it up while I’m at work.

Before my mom left for her trip, I took my parents to Cracked and Crepe for brunch. We sat down around 10:30, and the menu had so many tempting options. I was torn between one of their crepes or a skillet meal. But my mom and dad skipped all the breakfast choices—they didn’t think it was time for breakfast since it was getting close to 11 AM, so they were leaning more toward lunch. My first-generation Asian parents weren’t quite sure about having breakfast for lunch. I tried explaining the concept of brunch, but in the end, we went with lunch options. We were the only table there eating lunch. LOL. I had a delicious turkey pesto panini. One day, I’ll take them for a proper breakfast there. They make a great breakfast!

Anyway, I just finished reading Local Woman Missing and had our book club meeting with my colleagues last week. The overall consensus was that we didn’t really enjoy the book. If you’re planning to read it, go ahead and skip this paragraph. The book was told from four different points of view, and it kept jumping back and forth between the past and present. While some parts worked okay, a lot of it felt rushed and lacked detail. Honestly, I was pretty frustrated with how it ended—I ended up with more questions than answers. We’ll be choosing our book for March this week, so I’ll let you know what I’ll be reading this month. I hope I enjoy this one.

This month has already been pretty expensive, and it’s only just begun. Last week, we had some extreme winds here in North Texas, which ended up pushing one of the light fixtures on the front of my house out of the masonry. I found a great handyman on Thumbtack.com, and when he took a look, he discovered that the electrical box wasn’t even properly anchored into the wall. It was just wedged in with pieces of wood. Over the years, as the wood wore down, the box had been slowly slipping out of the wall, and eventually, the entire light would have just fallen off. The extreme wind was helping it along. My handyman securely anchored the box into the wall, so now the light is properly fixed and flush against the wall.

Then today, I found a puddle under my kitchen sink—the garbage disposal was leaking. I went out, bought a new one, and reached out to Victor, the handyman. He is coming by later today to replace the leaking one. I’m really hoping nothing else goes wrong this month. Fingers crossed!
